Gastric Bypass Before and After : Gastric bypass is a surgical procedure performed on the intestines to correct the amount of food taken by an individual. It works by reducing the amount of nutrients absorbed in the intestines and corrects weight and its associated health problems. It is mostly performed on people who are excessively obese to prevent the potential dangers associated with excessive body fat. In the US, gastric bypass is the most popular form of bariatric surgery and is preferred by most surgeons because there are fewer complications involved compared to other procedures or methods of weight-loss surgery. Regardless, all types of weight-loss surgery involve procedures that are considered risky or could bear serious side effects or both. They also involve permanent changes to diet and exercise on a regular basis in order to guarantee a successful process.

Gastric bypass surgery is used to correct weight on individuals whose Body Mass Index (BMI) is over 35, preferably 40 plus, those with type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertension etc. BMI is determined by dividing the body weight in Kgs by the square of the height in meters. The surgical procedure helps the obese or patient with comorbid conditions to best manage their weight by changing their lifestyle and eating habits which in turn effectively manages obesity.

In gastric band, a band is utilized to reduce the size of the stomach and the amount of food required to make an individual full. In performing gastric bypass surgery, general anesthesia is administered to allow the patient to sleep in a pain-free manner. The process will generally involve two steps: to make the stomach smaller and to perform the actual surgery. In the first step, the surgeon uses staples to partition the stomach in small upper section (the pouch) and bottom larger section. The food eaten will go to the pouch which holds only about one ounce of food.

In performing the actual gastric bypass surgery, the surgeon connects a small section of the small intestine (also known as the jejunum) to a little hole in the pouch. The food eaten now passes from the pouch to the little hole in the small intestine to allow the body to absorb fewer calories. This process can be performed in two ways. First, with open surgery where the surgeon surgically makes a large cut to open the belly and proceed to do the bypass on the small intestines, the stomach and other body organs. Secondly, a laparoscope, a tiny camera, is placed on the belly. This surgical process is known as laparoscopy and the surgeon makes 4-6 small cuts in the belly then passes the laparoscope through any of them. It is then connected to a video monitor for close monitoring in the operating room. Laparoscopy has some advantages over open surgery: quick recovery which lets the patient stay in the hospital for short periods of time, less pain during the procedure, generally smaller cuts, and reduced risk of getting infections or hernia. In addition, the process of surgery only takes between 2 and 4 hours to complete.

The similarities in gastric bypass before and after the surgery include diet and exercise. This is not “instant coffee’ to help correct the problems of obesity. The patients have to continue watching what they eat and doing exercise to keep the weight in check. After surgery, what is eaten is of equal importance to make the surgical process a success.

Just like any surgical procedure, gastric bypass has a number of risks, some are serious and some are not. The risks include: loss of blood in the process of surgery, difficulty in breathing, blood clots especially in the legs that could possibly get to the lungs, possible allergic reactions towards drugs, possible heart attack or even stroke during the surgical process or immediately after, infection in the cut regions, lungs, kidney and bladder.

After surgery, the success of the process majorly depends on the lifestyle that the patient adapts. The patient considering weight loss surgery should remember that it is not a “quick fix” for obesity and that a certain lifestyle should be incorporated. To begin with, some of the habits that are acceptable in gastric bypass before and after the surgery include visiting health facilities for tests before the procedure, quitting smoking and other forms of drugs temporarily for several weeks before surgery etc. After the surgery, food stuffs should not be consumed until about three days later.
